Speaker: Lord Peter GOLDSMITH, QC
Former U.K. Attorney General
European and Asian Chair of Litigation, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP

Topic: Law, War and Terror

As the British government's top lawyer from 2001 to 2007, Peter GOLDSMITH had to advise on issues including whether the use of force against Iraq in 2003 was legal on the basis of United Nations resolutions. He will talk about his time as Attorney General, a period dominated by the so-called war on terror, which also involved significant developments in European and global regulations.

Lord GOLDSMITH became a Queen's Counsel in 1987, was created a Labour life peer in 1999 and became a Privy Counsellor in 2002. In 2007 he joined New York-based law firm Debevoise & Plimpton as its European Chair of Litigation and he now also oversees its Asian disputes practice. His clients now include Russia's Interros Group, which is fighting Rusal in courts around the world, and FIFA, which is trying to implement anti-corruption controls.
