Club Breakfast – A Report Launch: Workplace Sexual Harassment of Women Journalists in China

The speakers conducted a recent survey that covered 15 provinces in China (including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hubei, Zhejiang) to gauge the prevalence of sexual harassment of women journalists in the media industry in the territory, the type of offenses, the consequences of such behaviour on female reporters, and more. They discussed the results, including data that shows that around 83% of women journalists have encountered some form of sexual harassment at work. The speakers also shed light on the lack of anti-sexual harassment policies in media companies as well as solutions to better protect reporters from such abuse

Guangzhou Gender and Sexuality Education Center is a non-profit NGO founded in 2016 that conducts gender and sexuality education, training and advocacy activities in China. Executive Director Wei Tingting has worked for more than 10 years in the gender and sexuality NGO field. She is a high-profile feminist leader, being one of the “Five Feminists” who received national and global attention after being arrested for participating in sexual harassment awareness-raising activities in March 2015.

Sophia Huang Xueqin used to work for the China News agency and was also a special correspondent for Southern Metropolis Weekly in Guangzhou. She has created a platform called ATSH(Anti-sexual harassment) , helping victims of sexual harassment to share their stories.
