| Hong Kong-born Liu Heung Shing photographed two of the seminal historic events in the last decades of the 20th century: the rise of China through the upheaval of its economic reforms and the collapse of the Soviet Union under the stewardship of Mikhail Gorbachev. Presenting works from his memoir The World is Not Like This published in 2021 (discounted copies will be available for sale at the event), he will talk about his experiences in the course of multiple assignments in Beijing, Los Angeles, New Delhi, Seoul, Moscow, and present his worldview through the camera. | Liu Heung Shing was the first Time magazine photojournalist posted in Beijing since 1978. He later worked as chief photographer for the Associated Press which recognized him as Best Photographer in 1989 and 1991. He also received Photo of the Year from University of Missouri in 1989. In 1992, he shared with his colleagues in Moscow, a Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for documenting the collapse of the Soviet Union. For this, he further received the Overseas Press Club award in 1992. His previous books include China After Mao (1983), China, Portrait of a Country (2008), Shanghai, Portrait of a City (2010), 1911: The Road to Revolution (2011), and A Life in a Sea of Red (2019).
