What are the signals?” Mr. Sharma’s answer was laid out in his ten rules, which explained how to read the political headlines, the world billionaire rankings, the price of onions, the growing battles over trade deals, and popular magazine covers as signs of coming booms, busts, and protests.

Ruchir Sharma is the head of Emerging Markets and the head global strategist at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. His first book, Breakout Nations, appeared in April 2012 accurately foretelling the slowdown in the celebrated “BRIC” economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China.
