The launch last year of the new Bauhinia Party in Hong Kong has stirred intense curiosity, speculation and concern. Founded by a group of mainland-born businessmen aboard a yacht in Victoria Harbour, the new political party aims to recruit 250,000 members and extend the One Country, Two Systems arrangement for another 50 years, until 2097. But many are questioning whether Hong Kong needs a new political party. The pro-democracy camp has asked if the new party is a “Trojan horse” for China’s central government, while the pro-establishment camp has worried it is being supplanted. In his first public talk since co-founding the Bauhinia Party, chairman Dr. Li Shan will explain the reasons for establishing the party and his vision for Hong Kong’s future. Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg. |
