Tuesday, November 10, 2020
8:00pm HKT on Zoom
Regardless of the result of the U.S. presidential election, there will be new challenges ahead for Asia. These include America’s growing competition with China, North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and the future of Washington’s security alliances in the region. Kurt Tong, the former U.S. consul general in Hong Kong, former U.S. ambassador to APEC and former deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, will discuss the challenges—and opportunities—facing the next American administration. Moderated by FCC correspondent member governor Keith Richburg.
Ambassador Kurt Tong, a partner at strategic advisory firm The Asia Group, served as consul general and chief of mission in Hong Kong and Macau until 2019. He was previously the principal deputy assistant secretary for economic and business affairs at the State Department from 2014 to 2016, the deputy chief of mission and chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo from 2011 to 2014, and ambassador for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2011. As director of Korean affairs in the State Department, he played a leadership role in negotiations with North Korea as part of the Six-Party Talks, and he was one of the original architects of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. At The Asia Group, he leads the firm’s work in Japan and the broader East Asia region.
