Reporter Carmela Fonbuena dropped into the thick of battle as the Philippine military launched deadly strikes against pro-Islamic State militants in the southern city of Marawi in May 2017. Four years on, she pieces together the events and decisions that led to the biggest operation of the Philippine military in recent history — and its impact on regional security as well as the lives of ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire. In Marawi Siege: Stories From the Front Lines, she draws on accounts by soldiers, hostages, displaced civilians, government officials and former extremists. In this talk, Fonbuena will explore the long-lasting scars left by conflict, the lessons we can draw on combating extremism and the ways front-line reporters can navigate — and pierce through — the fog of war. Moderated by FCC Correspondent Governor Kristine Servando.
This event will also be livestreamed on Twitter.
