Topic: Accounting scandals and detecting financial irregularities
Accounting scandals are not new and tend to occur during economic downturns, when some companies feel the need to “dress up” their financial statements to mask problems and perhaps improve managerial compensation. Dr. Robinson will present & highlights from some of the more prominent accounting scandals from McKessin and Robbins in the 1930s to more recent cases.
He will highlight common threads in these scandals and lessons learnt, in order to assist us in detecting financial irregularities in the future .
Dr. ROBINSON is managing director of the education division, where he oversees the production and delivery of educational content and examinations for candidates, members, and other investment professionals. He joined CFA Institute as head of educational content in 2007. Previously, Dr. ROBINSON was an associate professor of accounting and director of the Master of Professional Accounting Program at the University of Miami. He also was managing director of T.R. Robinson & Associates, LLC, an investment advisory firm. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s and PhD from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. ROBINSON is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and CFA charterholder. He was active as a CFA Institute volunteer prior to joining the staff. Before and after joining CFA Institute, Dr. ROBINSON has been lead authoring and co-authoring for the CFA® Program curriculum.
