Please join us in extending a warm welcome to the club’s newest members. The membership committee meets regularly to go through the applications and are always impressed by the diversity of the prospective members. As you would expect there’s a healthy mix of Correspondents and Journalists and Associates – and all have interesting tales to tell – so if you see a new face at the bar, please make them feel welcome. Below are profiles of just some of the latest ‘intake’.
Trevor Hale
I began my career as a journalist at the daily newspaper in the small town in Alabama from where I hail. I was a press chief for the Atlanta Olympic Games, and have worked for Mercedes-Benz and Ford in various parts of the world, including 11 years in Mainland China. I am currently the head of global communications at INFINTI Motor Corp, the only global automaker headquartered in Hong Kong. I was active in the Shanghai FCC and feel very fortunate to have worked with many correspondents in Asia. My addiction to xiao long bao began in Beijing, the same time I began learning Mandarin. I continue to struggle with both.
Peter Lewis
I present Radio Television Hong Kong’s (RTHK) flagship business and finance program “Money Talk” on RTHK Radio 3 every weekday and host a personal finance programme “Money Talk Xtra” on Saturday mornings. I have spent 35 years working in financial services and have been the head of trading and CEO at various investment banks and brokers over the years. I love travelling and particularly exploring off-the-beaten-track places that tourists tend not to visit. I have visited over 100 countries and spent a considerable amount of time living or working in various countries in Asia, Europe and North America. I have spent the last 10 years living in Hong Kong with my husband Wayne.
Danielle McGrath
I have spent most of my career in finance, working for Lehman Brothers Asset Management in London followed by eight years with Neuberger Berman in London and Hong Kong. Last year, I decided it was time for a change. I recently joined Fox Networks Group as a marketing manager on the regional marketing team.
I grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from HKIS in 2003 when I moved to Boston to study English and Theology. In 2016, while between jobs, I spent time travelling and helping charities with their fundraising galas. Outside of work, I read, volunteer with Room to Read, travel, try new restaurants/bars… and of course spend time at the FCC.
Wayne Pak Yiu
I’m Pak and I work for Reuters as a video journalist based in Hong Kong. I cover all kinds of Hong Kong and Macau news for the TV side of the news agency so my days are almost never the same. I moved to Hong Kong from Brisbane almost two years ago after wrapping up a stint in multimedia producing and finishing my university studies. I’m a big fan of wine, craft beer and can never say no to a platter of cheese. Thankfully, I work it all off hiking the endless Hong Kong trails or exploring the streets of Kowloon. I love taking my camera out wherever I go. For a bit of peace and quiet I do some yoga. I speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese and am keen on polishing up the Spanish learnt during my university days. I love learning about different cultures and traditions so take every opportunity to jet off around the world. The most recent trip was to Iran and Uzbekistan, both countries well worth visiting. If I’m not out and about, I’m very content with a coffee and a book.
Gordon Soo
After a career in medicine at UCL, it was time to go home to Brunei but not before a career stopover stint in Hong Kong. That pit stop became a full stop, and since 1994, Hong Kong has been my home. I am a specialist in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (Ear-Nose-Throat Surgery). I have served Hong Kongers in the New Territories East, training young doctors as well as globally speaking and writing medical chapters and books. I speak English, Malay, Hakka dialect, Mandarin in sprinkles, and now ASEAN style Cantonese. Why join the FCC? I need the intellectual stimulation.
Rebecca Tjouw
I was born and raised in Hong Kong and have been working in the media industry for 20 years. The current media scene is proving to be a very interesting time for me as I am constantly striving to keep up with the digital transformation and the changes taking place in social media. There is still so much to learn. Looking forward to meeting new friends at the main bar.
